A Good Cause: Interview with the Philanthropic Club

There are very few romantically-secure people that may not have noticed Valentine’s Day passing. However, what people might not be aware of is the fact that right here in our own Segovia campus, a great cause took place that same day!

The Philanthropic Club, in order to raise money to help children in Ghana, was selling roses that were delivered on February 14th to your loved ones, whether a friend, or a romantic interest! I sat down with Sofia Hochschild, the President of the Philanthropic Club in the Segovia Campus, to talk about the initiative. For anybody that is unaware, what is the Philanthropic Club? What are your goals this semester? The Philanthropic club was created three years ago by a student who saw in the diverse IE community the opportunity to get together a group and get people that needed help, help. Her name is Tots Yende and she was also in the Student Government last year. That is how it started. The club basically tries to help NGOs or specific individuals around the world when they need aid or when they reach out.

We do this by organizing different events throughout the year, such as concerts, bake sales, parties at Irish or Destino (Some readers might remember the show that IE Football club gave us, for a good cause of course). For this semester we have a couple of goals, starting with the Valentine’s roses. Then, we will be organizing a Luna Bar event for Uniraid, and creating a partnership with the Green Club. However, our main focus is to get as many people involved as possible, to raise awareness for the club and our causes. You have an event happening on Valentine's Day. Please tell us what it is all about! The original Valentine’s Day event was first organized three years ago, and now we are trying to follow those steps, but at a greater scale. We are going to be selling roses, which include little cards that can have a short message, which will be delivered on Valentine’s Day. We will be selling the cards until the 13th of February. The roses will be delivered either with volunteers or members from the Music Club, which are collaborators for this event. For three euros you get one rose, and if you pay 10 euros, you get two roses and one song (which you can choose the theme of). Why did you choose Valentine's Day? We chose it because it is a very special date, known by everybody. Also because this event is not limited to couples, you can also send a rose to a friend to show your appreciation for them. So everyone is included and invited to celebrate! Especially because it is done in order to help children in Ghana. The NGO is called Ali Royals Surf & Soccer Foundation and we have been in direct contact with a grassroot volunteer. You can see a video in our Instagram page (@ie_philanthropic_club.) The money raised will be used to help children who are either orphaned, or their parents are alcoholics. These roses mean school supplies and clothes for them. Also, another thing this NGO does is iteach the children through sports. The physical activities teach them about perseverance, leadership skills, the importance of teams, and more. Lastly, one cannot forget about the fun they are having while they are at it. If people want to help, or get involved, what should they do? The Philanthropic Club Instagram aims at getting more people engaged and involved. If you are interested in joining, DM this account and get an instant reply! Right now, the club could use help in selling the roses in addition to getting the word out that this project is going on, and, of course, the roses deliveries. You can also reach us through Campus Groups!
