MADRID ART WEEK 2018 (21-26th February)
Madrid’s art week, from 21st to the 26th of February, hosted Spain’s biggest contemporary art fair ARCO, amongst other art expositions from national and international artists and contemporary art throughout the city.
The major international fair, ARCOmadrid, was not the only art event that Madrid hosted in the Art Week and February. There were several others, some covered here, together with suggestions for current expositions.

Art Week 2018 Highlights

ARCOmadrid 2018 was the 37th edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, bringing together artists from different generations and geographic regions. 211 galleries from 29 different countries. Of particular interest was the return of Alexander & Bonin, Thaddaeus Ropac , and galleries such as Van Doren Waxter or Barbara Thumm.

The fair’s 13th edition counted with 34 galleries specializing in contemporary and emerging art. They had the ONEPROJECT section that brought eight artists to Madrid, midway through their careers to promote the fair with their works. Of particular note amongst the participants were ; Carbo/Alterna Gallery ( Mexico-Cuba), Hugo Alonso, Roberto Rodriguez Redondo and Okuda San Miguel.
Janet Echeiman’s Madrid 1.8 sculpture in Plaza Mayor.
The sculpture was built with fibres and illuminated with lights. It measured 45 meters long, 35 meters wide and 21 meters high.
Echeiman said, “it was inspired by scientific data sets on the earthquake and tsunami that originated in Japan 2011 and the notion that we are all interconnected with the Earth’s natural systems.”

JUSTMAD
JustMAD ninth edition’s General Programme exhibited work from national and international artists is such as; Gabriela Bettini, Gema Ruperez, Avelino Sala, Carla Grunauer and Felipe Cohen. The fair’s Context section, united European and Latin American galleries, IFAC from Athens and Neebex from Bogotá.
This year they had a Parkour section which they claim, “ the aim was to establish ties between spaces for creation, galleries and different audiences.”

What is it about : An exhibition about Warhol’s development highlighting the way he captured the veneration for commercial goods influenced from the industrial inventions of the 19th century.

What is it about : Portuguese modernity through the lens of Lisbon-born writer’s aesthetic postulates.

What is it about: a selection of the Dutch’s photographs , Paris in the 1950s and people photographed from the 1960s onwards on his trips, Amsterdam and hometown.
Toulouse- Lautrec and the Pleasures of the Belle Époque

What is it about : An exhibition of the 33 posters created by the post-impressionist painter during his career.
