The Fresh Revolution of Independent Music

MADRID - It was one year ago when a Portuguese writer started bringing musicians and listeners closer through the Internet. Just Musically Speaking was born in a time in which only the lucky and profitable artists would have the chance to stand out of the gigantic mass of musicians around the world. However, Jaime Pignatelli and his team came with the mission of demonstrating the world that there is much more musical talent than we think.

“The idea of Just Musically Speaking is to shed the spotlight on artists who don’t get as much recognition from the industry, to share their ideas, passion and stories alongside this,” Augustin Eude, content creator and influencer, explained. “The project aims to bring forward the independent scene.”

Just Musically Speaking acts as a platform for people involved in music to interact with each other. A growing team of young people is in charge of establishing the magazine by publishing interviews, articles and reviews. Their focus is not only on more popular artists such as Arcade Fire but also on new or local musicians.

“Music is one of the seven Arts and so it should be treated not as a dogmatic matter where one should just listen to four or five artists,” Pignatelli, the CEO, emphasized. “Instead, one should keep searching for more and granting opportunities for diversity to exist within.”

Apart from the online project, they are willing to take music to the streets. Their first live concert took place under the umbrella of Open House Lisbon Events last September 23rd. It happened in Palace of Chiado (Lisbon, Portugal), where some Portuguese artists like Valter Lobo played and more than 1,000 people attended. The CEO’s plan is to do the next one in Madrid so the Spanish audience is able to know and enjoy Portuguese bands.

“The objective was to have the bands playing as close as possible to the audience, as well as to have the contrast of a rock concert in a Palace,” Pignatelli said. “It was free and we managed to put it together with little or no money due to the fact that the artists believe in our project.”

Regarding the scope of this first year and the expectations for the next ones, the team seem enthusiast and positive about their results, as they are convinced that people like this fresh approach that Just Musically Speaking is giving in order to boost alternative and independent music.

“We’ve grown a lot since starting, our community is in the thousands, we’ve had the opportunity to meet various artists, attend concerts and festivals as well as write and spread a lot of content on albums, events and artists,” Eude agreed. “We’ve now seen a growing interest in new influencers who are spreading the good word about everything music related.”

Just Musically Speaking was founded in 2016 by Jaime Pignatelli, a BBA-LLB student, and started with four other people who share love for music and crave to push it to new limits. Currently, their workforce is growing and they are pursuing the objective of developing their project much further.
