Student Life: No difference in priority between men and women's sports

As I [Clint Goodrich] mentioned to the author of the Expectation Gaps article in the last issue, from Student Life's perspective there is zero difference between Women’s and Men’s sports in terms of priority.

One of our goals is to offer athletics to those students who are interested in participating, and that is regardless of gender. Our athletics teams are born from our students showing interest, and commitment, to playing on a regular basis. Fortunately, this year there have been enough female IEU students interested to create teams in both football and basketball. I am personally delighted by this because I always felt that female sports were underrepresented on campus, solely because of lack of interest, and this year brought a swift and positive change.

With that being said there are certain athletic programs that have continuity and strict, specific requirements to fulfil in order for them to be able to compete in their respective federated competitions. Due to this, their uniforms were ordered well before the start of the academic year to ensure their arrival by the start of the competition. On the other hand, we are not able to order uniforms for programs that we are not certain will exist, and the Women’s Football team is a case in point. Though once these teams are established, the orders are placed in due fashion and are then subject to the fulfilment by the apparel company.

While we regret that the Women’s Football team did not receive their uniforms in time for their scrimmages it is not the only team, female or male, that has had to play a match without their official uniform. At the same time, I am happy to say that they do have their uniforms now and so they will be fitted out properly for when they go to compete at the Trofeo Rector up in Salamanca on March 16th and 17th, the official inter-university tournament of the Community of Castilla y León.
