Masked Assault - rumour unveiled
SEGOVIA - Last Monday January 15, an underage woman was assaulted, by a man wearing an animal mask in a street close to the teenager-frequented Cemetery Park in Segovia while she was allegedly on her way to dance class, in an altercation that featured a very particular modus operandi.
The story began as a rumor that was quick to spread among the girl’s acquaintances, and was soon shared on popular social media channels. It came to the attention of the Stork by word of mouth, thanks to the IE volleyball coach’s daughter, Sara Álvarez. However, the incident’s occurrence has been recently confirmed by Spanish newspaper El Norte de Castilla.
“Official sources ratify that it in fact exists a police complaint related to the event. Furthermore, they inform there is an open investigation since Monday night or late afternoon, based on the information provided by the victim at the precinct,” reads its article on the matter.
The girl, whose name is not revealed due to the sensitive nature of the case, managed to escape and get to her dance classes after she reportedly bit the aggressor’s arm as he attempted to strangle her from behind. According to the police complaint, the man is believed to have been wearing a lion’s or a dog’s mask to conceal his face.
What is peculiar about this case is the fact that, allegedly, the masked man used an empty purse and a pair of shoes as bait to draw in potential victims. The abandoned items rested on a public bench when the teenager approached them, presumably to check for the owner’s ID. It was then that the assaulter is believed to have jumped out of nearby bushes to grab the girl’s neck from behind.
This information was obtained from a couple of tweets posted under the account @Paola_martin20 on January 15. One of them is a retweet from @alexjumpen that includes a screenshot of a Whatsapp conversation. According to Álvarez, the account belongs to one of the victim’s dancing partners, who claims to have accompanied the girl to file the complaint after hearing about it at the dance studio. Both sources are included below.
Translated to English: ATTENTION, there has been an attempted assault by the street of the Cemetery park (Segovia) to a girl. A man wearing like a lion or dog mask. There were shoes and a purse on a bench.
Translated to English:
So
The thing is that the girl has found the shoes and the women’s bag and got intrigued.
So then she looked inside the purse to check for any documentation and take it to the police in case something had happened, because it is odd that there was also a pair of shoes.
And inside there was absolutely nothing. She stayed on the spot and this guy came out of the bushes wearing a lion’s or a dog’s mask or I don’t know.
And he grabbed her by the neck. She bit him and ran away, and later she went to the police, that told her that it is possible that the shoes and the purse were placed there as "bait".
So that the girl would stay around and that.
Nor the victim, who is fortunately now home and safe, or the owner of the Twitter account have agreed to an interview with the Stork on the matter. According to El Norte de Castilla, while it is impossible to determine the assaulter’s final intentions, Segovia’s Subdelegacion was prompt to deny sexual aggression.
Due to the unusual and disturbing nature of the incident, Segovian authorities have opted to remain cautious, having pronounced little about the case in order to prevent paranoia from springing. The general recommendation in social media is to beware of any abandoned items, particularly in public places, as the bait may adopt different forms depending on the situation. At the present day, there are no updates on the investigation.
