IEU Female Basketball: IE vs. Claret
SEGOVIA- On Sunday November 11th at the Pavillon de La Lastrilla, the university’s female basketball team won 66-29 in a friendly match against the junior team from Colegio Claret of Segovia.
“This was a practice match for everyone to show in the field what they have been learning and to progress, without having the pressure of a result. They were able to put into practice some of the defensive foundations worked in the last training's, with good results such as defending pass lines or over-making the player who runs the dribble,” said Mauro Martín, the couch of the IEU female basketball team.
The team has decided to not take part in any official competition this year, to play friendly matches and to know more about the Spanish culture and the Spanish basketball. For that reason, the players have done multiple friendly matches like in Avila, where apart from winning against one of the local teams, they were able to do a guided visit around the city and to attend a match from the Spanish Silver Basketball League and to take pictures with professionals players.
“By finding teams that our outside Segovia, so we are able to travel around, and he has organised a few activities as well, it is very fun because it makes the team closer, so we are not only a team, we have become a family as well. We are travelling together, we see each other all the time, we have become friends and we hang out outside basketball, which I think it’s very important because that’s is what ends up building a team. In a way, by not being able to compete, it is giving us more opportunities as a team to be closer and I think it’s great,” indicated Irene Ocariz, captain of the team.
Apart from the friendly matches that the team has played in Segovia against teams of more or less their level, they are doing various activities. They will go to Salamanca on December 8th to observe Perfumerias Avenida and apart from playing a match against a local team, they will visit the city. Likewise, they will go to Madrid to play a game from the cantera of Alcobenda, to watch a game from the second division of professional female basketball, and to visit the museum of the Spanish Basketball Federation.
“This cultural visit will be very interesting to the people that are studying in Segovia. We are also looking if we can attend a Real Madrid match among many other activities. The idea is to make them improve, grow, have fun, meet new people and learn more about the basketball in Spain, to make everything more dynamic and active, rather so competitive,” stated Mauro.
The IEU Female Basketball Club started running two years ago; however, it was not until last year that they began competing in the Segovia league. Their team is not only composed by IE girls, but also from University of Valladolid’s students, young local teams and workers in Segovia. Further, their main objective is to improve individually and their group technique, go to the games as a team and mostly, have fun. They are friendly group that calls upon more people to join their family.
