IEU Athletics separation from Campus Life

SEGOVIA- During the summer, IE University’s Athletics was been moved to a separate office, leaving “Campus Life”, in order to offer the undergraduate and master students an improved service.

“In the summer, we took the corporate decision to separate IE University’s Athletics, which is the undergraduates’ sports department from Campus Life; and to provide the undergraduate students with a better service, because we believe that sports at IE has many different approaches, depending on the profile of the student”, said Juan Barrio, director of IEU Athletics and Student Relations.

The new IEU Athletics administration’s main goal for this semester is to create awareness of a more powerful sports culture on campus, by producing a board where all the student body can get to know the teams, the top players of each game, and when important competitions will happen. Secondly, their other goal is to “settle-down” the sports teams by arranging times for training and looking for adequate equipment and skilled coaches. Thus, athletes can start competing in different leagues. Lastly, IEU Athletics aim to foster a community of those who play individuals sports like tennis or golf to train in a more competitive level.

“I am asking students for a little bit of understanding, we have new changes, so first we need time to adapt and put everything,” indicated Barrio.

“It is an important step for IE, as I believe they are trying to try to boost athletics and integrate it within the IE culture. Also, there are more students and the clubs are growing too. So, it makes sense to create a division only for sports as there are also a lot of clubs related to athletics and weekly competitions in most cases that need constant attention and coordination,” declared Balere Ortuzar, captain of the female football team.

Last January, Student Life was integrated

with Campus Life, joining the undergraduates’ and masters’ programs into a bigger office. After working together from January to June, they decided to split up the IE University’s Athletics from Campus Life into a sole organization. This decision was based on the necessity of offering a wide variety of services accordingly to the different athlete profiles around campus. For instance, undergraduate students may focus more on learning the sports’ values, while the masters’ students, with other goals and priorities), they might consider sports as a leisure activity. As a result, services at IEU Athletics will be more personalized.

Another improvement for this academic year is that the IEU Athletics is making a call of commitment to athletes at IE University; they should be dedicated to themselves, their studies and social life, but also their teams and the competitions.

IEU Athletics allows students to represent the university in various individual sports such as tennis, badminton and swimming, and team sports such as rugby, volleyball, football or basketball. Soon, more disciplines will be added while IEU Athletics keeps growing, and a 'Sports Opening Day' will take place in both campuses.
