IE to host first 3MT undergrad competition in Europe
On April 17th the IE Language center will host the first “3 Minute Thesis” competition. The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, originally developed by the University of Queensland, celebrates research conducted by students worldwide. 3MT has since been adopted by many universities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, IE, however, will be the first university in Europe to hold the 3MT competition at an undergraduate level.
As the name suggests, 4th and 5th year IE students participating in the 3MT competition will be challenged to communicate the topic of their thesis, findings, and impact of their research under a strict 3 minute time limit and are permitted only one powerpoint slide.
Students in their last year, from all degrees, that are working on their thesis project are eligible to participate. However, all students and faculty are welcome to attend.
The 3MT competition is a great way for 4th and 5 year students to practice defending their thesis, allowing them to increase their capacity to effectively explain their research. The IE language center is also collaborating with the IE Public Speaking Club to provide three preparation workshops for participants.
The one of the organizers of the 3MT, Elisabeth Gamarra, who is an Associate Professor and a Fulbright Fellow, highlights the benefits this competition will bring to participating students.
“3MT provides a unique opportunity to profile, showcase and celebrate innovative research and scholarly projects conducted by undergraduate students. Workshops will be provided and designed to prepare students for the competition. The event itself will offer students a platform to brand themselves as well as share their research in a fresh new way while enhancing their communication and presentation skills, a valuable experience that can easily be applied to any future career endeavors.”
For student attendees, the 3MT Competition is an opportunity to learn about the development of a thesis before beginning their own project. It is also an opportunity to network with the distinguished faculty, as well as other students and staff in attendance.
The competition will be held on April 17th at 16:00 until 18:00 on the 4th Floor of Velazquez, 13 in the Madrid Campus. For those who wish to attend, please register for the event at http://3mtatie.eventbrite.com?s=83664180.
