IE Football win: Match Report

This Sunday September 30, IE’s male football squad faced CD Distrito Fuencarral el Pardo in Pozuelo and snatched an impressive third win in a row with a score of 4-1.

As a result of what was, according to center back Jacques Gairard, “some of the finest football they had played in recent times,” the team was able to secure a clear win, featuring a great “Man of the Match” performance by striker Francisco Reyes. Now, when you see Reyes’ face on posters along the Madrid campus stairwell, you will know it is well-diserved.

The positive results of the last three fixtures have created hype among the IE community, which was effectively represented for the first time in the season by a group of supporters.

“No one really wants to be a show-off, but the truth is, when you’ve got fifteen female supporters urging you on, it’s inevitable that you’re going to add that unnecessary fourth step over… or that cheeky flick. It’s all part of the game,” claims captain Jacques Gairard.

Gairard has kindly provided “The Stork” a detailed match report for any fans that were not able to come, and want to follow the team’s every step. You can find it below:

We were rewarded early on, with Diaz playing a fine through ball into the edge of the box, Reyes taking a wonderful first touch away from the defender, who stuck out a leg and brought our number 7 down. Penalty to IE. No debate on who was going to take it, it was Reyes’. Ice cold nerves combined with a fine strike saw the ball sail into the top right corner of the net. 1-0.

The second came 10 minutes later, through a lovely link-up play between Reglero, Tobar and Reyes. Sartori found some space following a scrumcious lay off and buried a left foot shot into the corner of the goal. 2-0.

The pace slowed following the second. Long balls sailing across the pitch, a bit of a bore and not so pretty to watch. Gairard and Parma seemed confident enough to deal with the long balls, although there’s no doubt that the gaffer’s* decision to bring on Leysen in the second half eased any hesitation.

We added a wonderful third goal in the second half thanks to a divine pass from Reglero, and the most delicate of chips from Sartori. Reglero’s got even better vision than the great elf Legolas, and as for Sartori’s finish, he didn’t even break a sweat. 3-0.

It can’t all be sweet though, and despite remaining unbeaten, we conceded our first goal of the season. It was Gairard who was caught out on a long ball, completely misreading it as he watched it bounce over his head for their striker to bury into the net. 3-1.

Despite a bit more pressure from our opponents following their goal, Reyes managed to put the game to bed with an absolute belter into the top right corner. 4-1.

A massive shoutout to our Latin American players Fran Reyes, Quique Reyes and Von Walter, all new imports from Segovia, showing the real talent South America has to offer. Funny story though, they only agreed to play for the team if we promised them a bottle of Aguardiente at the end of every game. Top form.

Special mention to Javi Ihatsu, the smallest player on the pitch, who scored a header that almost matches Van Persie’s in quality…only for it to be whistled for offside

Lastly, wishing a very swift recovery to Quique Reyes, who was rushed off to hospital following a nasty knee injury, and a big thank you to those who came to support. Hope to see more of you next time!
