#GameRecap: VB Girls lose another two games

IE Volleyball Girls conceded another two successive defeats in the Segovia’s municipal tournament. The team lost 1:3 to Molten on Sunday, Jan.21, followed by a defeat with the same score against Los Unos y Los Otros a week later. The games, played at the Enrique Serichol gym, accumulated into a streak of 3 losses out of 3 games.

The Girls contested four sets with Molten, winning the 1st by 28:26, and losing the rest by 20:25, 20:25 and 19:25. In their game against Los Unos, the Girls were able to snatch the first set with 27:25 only to lose 20:25, 16:25, and 24:26.

In both games, the Girls produced strong starts with consistent pressure with on-point serves, spikes and saves, however the team proved to be unable to capitalize in both games, constantly edging each set to the other team.

In the game against Molten, the Girls dispatched Carlota Guedes, Nadine Oppenheimer, Farida Nagger, Arielle Combrinck, Lamees Ahmad in their starting line-up, with captain Andrea Trevisan as the setter and Valentina Soto as the only substitute. The line-up fought for every point in each set only to succumb to end-game pressure, exploited by Molten.

The line-up against Los Unos comprised of Nagger, Oppenheimer, Ahmad, Soto with Alessia Ricchiuti as setter and Sofia Kurtis as team captain, replacing Trevisan, who was sidelined due to a hand injury. The line-up played with no substitutions and this showed effect as by the end, the team lost concentration from exhaustion.

Despite showing consistency in the early stages of the games, the Girls accumulated a total of 55 direct errors against Molten and 58 against Los Unos.

This highlighted with Girls giving away a 9-point point gap against Los Unos in their last set, as well as allowing Molten to break crucial points in the end-game/

“I think we put our expectations too high to win the game and we started to underestimate their abilities and lost focus, putting not as much effort into the game, and this is something that we have to work on throughout the season,” explained Nagger, the Girls’ top point scorer against Los Unos.

“We hustled a lot in the beginning and we were communicating very well, but towards the end we lost the concentration and struggled to form attacks,” stated Oppenheimer, who hit 25 spikes and scored 8 points against Molten.

Nonetheless, the Girls believe that the defeats will eventually end, as their performance has only improved during the last three games.

“The goals for the season should be commitment in terms of training, especially when there are tests, it’s easy not to go to training, but we have to commit and show sportsmanship,” stated Kurtis, who captained the Girls’ against Los Unos.

The Girls will be participating on Wednesday in the Campus Clash, an IE Athletics event, where teams from each campus will be competing against each other.
