Fresher’s Week, As Told by the Freshers

Fresher’s Week, a yearly tradition at our university, welcomes incoming First Years to the IE community. Different events are planned by the Student Government along the week, both during the day and the night. Split into the two different campuses, the aim is to make First Years more comfortable with the transition into university life and to enable connections between the hundreds of new undergraduates.

From the 10th to the 15th of September, First Years were able to sign up for the events that interested them through Campus Groups, a platform that Student Services regularly depend on.

On the IE Madrid Campus, activities spanned from networking lunches to a night out in the trendy Boutique club. Attendance was high with students from every academic year at IE present on nights out.

Pablo, a first year from the Madrid campus, says that even though he unfortunately could not attend a lot of the events, the lunches, introductions to classes, and nights out were all a great and positive introduction to IE University.

Pablo also attended the inauguration ceremony in Segovia, which took place in the campus´s Aula Magna in the first day of the celebratory week. The Opening Day was an emotional moment according to the present students and families, who expressed how the event acted as an exciting start to the first year of university.

After the inauguration, as the Madrid students got on a bus back to transport them back to their city, Fresher’s Week began in earnest in Segovia. Many cited the Aqueduct Sunset, a cocktail party on the rooftop of Segovia´s Hotel Acueducto, as their favourite event. “Super chill” and “great vibes” are how First Years are describing it, which demonstrates a high satisfaction rate. The night events were also popular, as is the case of Flanda´s ¨Propane¨, a rave organised by third-year students, which scored a successful night with positive reviews. Nonetheless, the incoming students also expressed some criticism about the capacity of some of the events, like the Irish Blacklight Party which they feel was overcrowded.

Many students were unable to reach their respective campuses early enough to participate in the events for various issues, such as Visa problems, which can be explained by the fact that IE´s student base is over 75% international, as stated on the official university web page. However, one of these students, Qinci, maintains that he feels fine and comfortable in IE, and does not feel like missing Fresher’s Week inherently meant a failing start to university life.

All in all, IE can congratulate itself on other Fresher’s Week and to the First Years, from all of us at the Stork, we welcome you and hope that you enjoy all of your first year as much as you enjoyed your first week!
