Creativity is all around!
Did you notice students running around Segovia campus covered in paint? The first year communication students have been expressing themselves in a very creative way.
One week ago, several students from Communications came up with the innovative idea to start a very special project with the help of their graphic design teacher, Francesco Maria Furno.
Their assignment was to pursue a creative path that would lead their minds into see things from a different perspective.
"Sometimes, the mind can surprise us, allowing us to unlock new ways of thinking," said Lily Devin, a participant of this undertaking.
Choosing to undertake a photoshoot with the aim of exploring the different ways in which students generate ideas, and more importantly, interpret them.
“I was thinking about the zodiacs and how we all represent each other signs of creativity and how we all have a different process. I thought that it would be fun to represent it in a cool photoshoot environment” she explained.
By using paint and various other tools, she realized her vision.
“Fire - Earth - Water - Air”
“I thought that it would be way more intriguing to capture the expression of each sign group so you could figure it out exactly what it is that they were trying to convey”
This is why she decided to represent the air as an analogy for intellectual creativity. Fire, which is portrayed as defining energy, was represented through the paint. The earth demonstrates knowledge as being omnipresent while contrasting with water, which serves as a way to appreciate traditions and go with the flow.
For Malaka Badr, this project was about surprising her teacher, Francesco Furno, by doing something different with her skills.
“He is really hard to please and gets students to think out of the box and their comfort” she said, who chose photography and, gradually, built up a scale of emotions that are, for her, related to creativity.
“Creativity is so objective. You can take it in anyway you want!”
“There is no right or wrong way to do it”
“It’s freedom.”
“Being creative for me is about going out of comfort zone.”
“I always wanted to use paint [because] paint brings so much creativity vibes.”
"The final photo would be messy and great to show the contrast of vibe-ness and happiness that brings creativity,” said Badr.
Lucky for her, the models who volunteered were passionate.
“Because my models were so great, we ended up doing an individual photoshoot of just girls or just boys with good poses” she mentioned.
“It went so well because I had a bunch of creative people with me.”
In the end, everything managed to reach her expectations: “Overall, it was what a photoshoot should always be like” she affirmed.
The craziness of the models added to Malaka’s mindset, and can be considered as “a symbol of creativity” as they shared ideas together in ways that allowed them to think in a creative manner.
According to Badr, the main lesson learnt is to loosen up and not always rely on pre-made plans. You just have “to go with the flow."
Finally, Sveva Fossati had a different perception on the concept of creativity and chose to focus on the idea of opening and closing the mind through the different steps of the creative process.
“To me creativity is openness and acceptance” she said.
She decided to begin her piece by capturing a clear blue sky, symbolising open mindness while contrasting with a darker tone, representing a closed mindset.
The pictures in between, taken on different days, aim to show the various thoughts and ideas that occur during the process of creativity. She simply inverted the sky, observed it, and interpreted it in a very personal and harmonious way.
By making the projects conducted by these students unique, it allowed each to be seen and interpreted as completely different. Revealing to us an intimate perspective of their personality.
The main goal of the teacher was to force the students to open up and share their personalities with eachother.
“In each case, you [can] publish it on your social networks using the hashtag: #ieucreativityday"
Go on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, enter the hashtag, and see what happens. You will be surprised.
