Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th!

When living in an advanced society such as that of Spain, it is easy to begin to feel as though gender equality is not a pressing issue today. However, this is not the case, as many living in both developed and developing countries do not have the luxury of sharing these sentiments.

The UN Women’s page reports that “almost 90% of 143 economies studied have at least one legal difference restricting women’s economic opportunities” and that of those 143, “79 economies have laws that restrict the types of jobs that women can do” (UN Women).

The fight for equality is still ongoing and the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report has found that gender parity is still over 200 years away (WEF). Now, more than ever we need to stay motivated and continue to push for a future in which both genders are equally empowered by the institutions surrounding them.

So, this International Women’s Day, wear purple to support the fight towards gender parity! In addition, you can support the movement locally by taking part in the 24-hour strike that women will conduct across Madrid today March 8th. The purpose of this demonstration is to highlight the fact that even in this developed nation, women are still penalized in their work environments and ultimately make less when compared to their male counterparts.

If you are asking yourself, “how can I do more to support the movement?” then look no further than the Charities below:

The Girl Effect: “We build youth brands and mobile platforms to empower girls to change their lives”. This non-profit organization is focused on shaping the futures of women in developing countries by impacting and supporting females youths across the globe.

The Malala Fund: “If one girl with an education can change the world, what can 130 million do?” Headed by the famous Pakistani Nobel Prize Winner, Malala Yousafzai, this global initiative is pushing boundaries. By advocating for and investing in the lives of the female youth in developing nations, the Malala fund strives to transform the number of girls who are out of school from 130 million to zero.

As the links above demonstrate, there are plenty of organisations that are working to nurture young women, with a major focus on developing their educational opportunities in under-developed regions. Any support that you may be willing to provide could essentially open doors for those whose lives are affected heavily by this discrimination. Ultimately, whether you wear purple, take part in the strike, or donate, any and all contributions will surely push our society towards a brighter, more equal future.
