An affordable Spring Break getaway: Lisbon
Throughout 2017, Lisbon was honored as the 2017 Ibero-American Capital of Culture and ranked one of the top cities to visit in Europe by different travel websites. Portugal’s capital city combines history, art and good food all for a great price which makes this Spring Break 2018 the perfect opportunity to visit, and enjoy a warmer weather after Segovia’s cold winter.
You can be charmed by the city’s atmosphere, roads, beaches and views. But, the best part if you can get to experience the vibrant city in less than a week.
Next you will find some suggestions to add to your plan for an affordable Holiday in the place that can be considered ‘the coolest city in Europe’.
Getting there
From Madrid Airport Barajas there are returning flights starting from 60 euros with Easyjet airline if you buy tickets with time. The great thing about Lisbon is that is only 6 to 8 hours away from Madrid by car. So getting a last minute Flixbus or BlaBlaCar will still be affordable with prices around 25 to 40 euros per way.
Staying there
Don’t just visit the city, experience it by staying at an Airbnb. The average price per night in an entire home on the website is 65 euros. Yet, you can stay in a private room in the city center for only 18 euros a night!
Eating there
Even though by staying in an apartment you can get to cook your own meals, Portugal is known for great cuisine for an affordable price.
You can’t leave Lisbon without trying the traditional dessert Pasteis de Belem or Pasteis de Nata.
Visiting there
Lisbon center is easy to explore in a day or two. The City Center was reconstructed after the earthquake in 1755, which gives it a modern vibe compared to other European Capitals.
Go to Baixa in city center, specifically to Praça Do Rossio and take a free walking tour to get to know the city’s main historic facts and hidden gems.
When exploring the seven hills take shoes with a good grip since the beautiful pavement is also very slippery.
Partying there
Compared to Madrid this city is not about going to one single club and paying a high entrance fee. In Lisbon you can bar hop and have a nocturnal flow either in Bairro Alto where you can find more than 250 bars or in the hip neighborhood of Cais do Sodré.
